Lady gagaH!

Last Sunday, I signed myself up to teach some kids english at a community centre. It's sort of like a baptist centre where people come to have free food every Sunday (like soup kitchen la), and families who cannot afford tuition send their kids here for english tuition.

Having been on a career break for so long and forced to think about passions in life, I remember my happier moments:
1. being able to get into the advisory team where I was able to have a more planning and seeing things from a big picture role
2. CSR project where we brought orphans from several homes for a day out into our office. The main purpose of that project is to introduce the workplace and conduct talks so as to plant hope and motivation into these kids and also to put them in touch with the scholarship/helpline etc organisations.

Referring to moment #2, to be honest, I didn't really participate much during the planning stage because:
- I was in the midst of a very busy time (but then again i was always busy heh)
- this project contributed nothing to our KPI
- some colleagues were getting shit left right centre for apparently spending 'more time' on this project than work.
Come to think of it, the team did a remarkable job in planning and politicking. So in the end I was only in charge of door gifts and the more specific role was to get people to sponsor these door gifts - i was very lucky and managed to get everything sorted out within 2 days. So the day came where the orphans were welcomed into the office. I didn't want to go at first, being it was a Saturday and I treasure my sleep on weekends more than anything. But I went, and that sparked the beginning of my interest in stuff like this lor.

Some conversations:
Me: "So what do you want to be when you grow up?"
Kid 1: "erm.. Accountant..?"
Me: "Oh kid, trust me, you do not want to be an accountant.." and told him everything bad about the accounting profession.. yea yea bad accountant watever

Me: "So looking at your hobbies, you like to talk and read.. oh and you're really good in english.. what do you want to be when you grow up?" (hoping to hear the answer lawyer)
Indian Kid 2 grinning: "Accountant!"
Me: "Whyyyyy?"
Kid 2 doesnt answer..
Me: "Ok erm, do you know what a lawyer is..?"
Kid 2 shakes head..
I chuckle at myself for expecting a 14 year old kid to know what a lawyer is before proceeding to tell him (actually should they be knowing what a lawyer is ar?)

In the end, ALL the kids wanted to be accountants... -.-

So back to my kid teaching activity last sunday, we were to read Peter and Jane to kids. The kid I was assigned to was 12 years old and she couldn't read really basic words like where, there, with.. etc. Le sigh. I spent 1 and half hours going through 2 pages of Peter and Jane with her, it really wasn't enough. Maybe we should prolong the studying hours hmm.. She was willing to learn though. I'm not sure what to do if she rejected me. then i'd feel really sad :( But, so far it has been smooth and personally rewarding , i hope i'll still have time for it once i start work! *fingers crossed*

oh want to share something! :) enjoy
